Tu the Editor of the Standard. Sm,—To-morrow the latepayers of the Wiuohiue River District are called upon to elect five members, who will constitute the River Board of Conservators for the next three years. It is to be hoped they will elect a Board of some business capacity and intelligence who will not bungle the affairs of the Board and then solicit votes partly to serve personal interests. The late Board met monthly to expend the rate money in such a way as suggested by the working-overseer, and occasionally clamored at the shortness of funds, while the deed and documents relating to a valuable a -set was at their disposal in the office of the Bolt'd—-sixty-four acres of land, returning nothing since it was purchased (about ten years ago), out of a block com-p-ising 500 acres, then partly in the occupancy of Mr T. Walker, and subsequently purchased hy him, the residue of which ho more recently disposed of. The asset referred to was brought to light hy Mr John Sperrey, Property-Tax Commissioner, intimating his ■ -‘ion to levy a property tax on same. Labor and ime... xseiv ever known so cheap as at fencing material was .... ' • *■•>« laud it could present; and if the Board had fence .. ' " then bo let for some £6O or £BO per annum, insteau o. tlie nominal rent of £lO »-year for four years. The late Board should also have resigned last January by effluxion of time, and I question If they hare been legally in office since then If It were tested. I am, &c., Ratepayer. Oreytown, June 28,1888. To the Editor of the Standard. Sir —At the Quadrille Assembly at Fcatherston on Wednesday night, I and twenty three other ladles attended the weekly dance. Two of the sterner sex were present and paid the shilling, anhmher of yokels stood outside and enjoyed the situation. I would suggest that next week the young ladies wall uikiu the young men at their residences with greit coats and wraps and invite tnem to the dance each lady providing herself with the necessary shilling. I am, 4e-, A Tumum PAMIb
