The Education Report.

The report atatea that the average school attendance for the year waa 80,303, which ia 4,911 in excess of the previous year. It is remarked that the number admitted during the year (50,628) ia nearly half the total number on the books at the end of the year (103,407). It ia stated, however, that the irregularity and fitfalnees of school attend anee thus disclosed are diminishing rather than increasing, but that the unsteadiness of attendance undoubtedly militates against the efficiency of the schools. The proportion of children under seven years of age is steadily diminishing, and the proportion between seven and ten is increasing. The camber of teachers is 100 more than last year, and of pupil teachers 72 more ; the respective totals being, teachers 1757, pupil teachers, 862. The total salaries of teachers during the year amounted to 1/270,623. The highest individual salary was L 486; there were 16 above L 406 (7 being in Otago, 4 in North Canterbury, 3 in Auckland, and 1 in Hawkee Bay); 47 from L3OO to L4OO ; 207 from L2OO to L3OO ; 949 from LIOO to L 200; 1549 below LIOO per annum. Tua rate of expenditure waa L 3 17s sfd per pupil, as against L 3 17s ltd in 1884, and L 3 18s o*d in 1883. The whole cost, reckoned on the average attendance, ia L 4 2e 7d per child. The cost of Board management is 5s Ifd per child. The total cost of educational administration doling the year (exclusive of expenditure on school building*), was L33t>,333 The expenditure on school buildings was L 64.821.
