Board of Education.

Tha monthly meeting of the Board of Education was held on Wednesday morning. A letter was read from the Education Depart man t stating that votes of money granted for building purposes should not be expended for the re-painting of schools and teachers' residences. Members considered the order was a very umeasonable one. and it was decided that a letter should be written to the department protesting against its enforcement.

A letter was read from the Masterton Committee asking the Board to enforce the compulsory clauses of the Act in their district. The Mayor suggested that some one should be appointed to see that the children attended school. Mr Buchanan remarked that in many cases the committees were to blame lor the lax attendance. Mr. Bunny said that in Featherston a constable was employed to look after the children who did not attend school. The Chairman regretted to say the class it was most desirable to draw to the school was the very one found in the public streets, and the system of education in vogue consequently missed its aim to a certain extent. His expe rience was that the children who attended school were those who would attend under any circumstances. It was decided to ac cede to the request of the Masterton Committee. A letter was read from the Masterton Committee, asking the Board to set aside £i<X) for the purchase of a site for a school in the north part of Masterton. It was decided to inform the Committee that the Board would build a school house at a cost of £SOO as soon as the Committee finds a site. Application* from Mount Cook and Dalefield Committees for votes for the erection of shelter sheds were refused, owing to want of funds. It was decided to invitetenders for repairs to the teachers' residence at Parkvale. the work to be proceeded with if it can be carried out for a reasonable amount. The Waihenga Committee applied for a grant for additions to the teacher's residence. It was decided that the architect should call for tenders, so as to enable the Board to ascertain what amount the proposed work will cost. A letter was read from (he Masterton Committee, asking for a return of the children of school age. It was decided to accede to the request as soon as the information is in the possession of the Board. It was decided that tenders should be invited for repairs to the teachers’ residence at Parkvale, but the Board did not undertake to carry nut the work. Mr j. Hodder wrote with reference to alleged irregularities in connection with the election of a committee at Dalefield, The Board decided to ask the committee and the teacher for an explanation. Miss C. M Kenzie applied for a bonus for the number of passes gained by her at the Wangaehu School. The Board could not see its way to grant the application.
