Carterton Special Settlement Association.

A deputation from the above Association, comprising Messrs Fairbrother, Hardener, and Yule waited upon the Minister of Lands yesterday, and were introduced by Mr Buchanan, MHR. The deputation stated that they had been inspecting a block of hind in the Forty Mile Bush, on the Maugaoue, for a special settlement, and found the area of good land too small for their purposes. They therefore asked the Government to give them a block on the Mangatainoke, near the Manawatu River. The Minister of Lands informed them that the Government were pledged to the Land Board to have the block referred to laid open under the ordinary conditions, but he was willing to open negotiations with the Land Board, requesting them to forego the land, end take in exchange the block which the Association had been inspecting, and which they considered too small for their requirements. The deputation expressed themselves as satisfied with this, and withdrew.

One of the deputation informed our representative last night that Mr Ballance assured them he would give every facility to the Carterton Association obtaining their land, as he was fully assured that the Carterton settlers were specially adapted for the project, being the very bone and sinew of a bushfalling and energetic class ol colonists.
