Mrs Florence Evangeline Mumby, wife of Mr Richard Mumby, of Hawera, died on Wednesday afternoon while under chloroform, administered to allow one of four teeth being extracted. Two doctors were present. A match took place on Monday at New Plymouth between the Taranaki Riflemen and the Masterton Rifles. The shooting was fair. The Mayor of Christchurch on Wednes* da)' received a telegram signed J B Russell from Napier, “ Labor here very dear and scarce, send hundred." He telegraphed to the Mayor ot Napier for confirmation of the statement. The Mayor of Napier replied that Mr Russell referred to was connected with a draining contract at Hastings ; there were plenty of unemployed in the district, willing to work at fair wages, and he requested that no men be sent on any account.

We perceive that tbe Greytown Fire Brigade and tbe Private Brass Band hare amalgamated to oarry on tbe Qreytown Quadrille Assembly during, the winter months. There is no doubt it will be bet'er both for themselves and the public to hold one weekly dance between them than to oarry on separately. It is proposed to introduce a partly rooal entertainment occasionally.

A bash fire at Papawat yesterday afternoon, between four and five o'clock, destroyed a large stable, some bay and harness, the property of Mr John Bkeet. The grass fires in Canterbury has done much damage. Accounts from Waikari state that the tussock fire near Amberley baa destroyed all the Road Board bridges in the Omibi Valley, and swept over 50.000 acres behind Q. H. Moore’s bouse, and ia said to have destroyed 10,000 of his sheep in one paddock alone. The BeWidere School Committee met on Tuesday evening to investigate the charges made against Mr J. Marohant Fraser, the headmaster. The members of the Committee present were—Messrs Morgan (chairman), Zabell, Stevens, Butler, Anderson and Burnett. The last named gentleman brought the matter forward, which consisted of aeon* rations of immorality ou the part of Fraser. The evidence was of snob a character that it is unfit for publication, but the Committee, after bearing the evidence of several witnesses, considered . the charges folly proved. On account of his wife and family Fraser was allowed to tender his resignation instead of being dismissed. He asked that three months should expire before giving up the school, but the Committee refused this and a month’s notice was allowed. We tkink if the charges were of so grave a nature, and were fully proved by tbe month of several witnesses, that the Committee should havs dismissed Fraser, and not allowed hits tbe option of resigning. His presence ia the school should not be tolerated. Mr Wilmot Powell, a well known merchant Wanganui, died of oanoer on Tuesday last.
