Wairarapa Standard Published Tri-weekly, Price Id. MONDAY, FEBRUARY 22, 1886. The Government Insurance and Mr Fisher.

The Evening Press of February 18th contains a long letter from Mr Fisher in reply !o one of Sir Julius Vogel’s sent to the New Zealand Herald at Auckland. Mr Fisher shows rery plainly that the appointment of Mr Henry Driver to the Dunedin Office at a salary of £IOOO per annum, was a mere job- He also shows i hat the expenditure of £84,000 for land sites at Dunedin, Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch, and the contemplated expenditure of £90,000 for buildings to place upon those sites is very extravagant, seeing that fairly good buildings have to be pulled down which are already upon the sites. All this betrays atoned the extravagant mind of the borrower of the millions, Sir Julius Vogel, of whom this colony would be gladly rid, if he would only leave ns- But we would like 'o ask Mr Geo. Fisher a question. He represents the policy holders of this Valley and wa look to him for a reply at his earliest convenience. How came it that lie, complaining so much as he does of bad management in Auckland, Dunedin, and Christchurch, formerly led the agitation as he did, against the appointment ”f local boards in those places ! These three Boards would have cost very little ; not more than the salary promised to Mr Driver'alone, and being two thirds elective 'hey would have properly checked Sir Julius Vogel’s extravagant ideas.
