Carterton Jottings.

Br OnijOokbb. Here I am again, after being almost baked, for what with fire, smoke, and sun, I can assure you Carterton has been a warm shop just now. On Sunday afternoon last our fire bell rang an alarm, owing to the hush at the back of Mr Broadbenl’s house being on fire. The Brigade had very hard work to prevent the fire spreading, but eventually succeeded in doing so. It is asserted that this bush was wilfully set alight; if snob realty is the case the individual should be thoroughly ashamed of himself. Wilful disregard to the great danger of lighting fires daring this exceptionally dry season is of hourly occurrence, and it is high time strenuous efforts were made to prevent persons doing so. On Monday last Mr Harry Potts, the musical director of the Lyceum Hall, saw fit to enter married bliss, and was united to Miss Hollard, of the White Hart Hotel, by the acting registrar, Mr Baxter. May they be happy. We received a Salvation Army visit on Sunday last. The Captain announced that " a great field day ’’ would be held in Carterton ou Sunday next, when the lovely band of the Masterton corps will be in attendance. What a day for the editor of the local paper and the larrikins.

The Carterton Lodge of Oddfellows announce their annual ball on Anniversary Day, which should prove a great attraction. The Totara Lodge of Druids held their hall yearly summoned meeting the other evening. The attendance of members was unusually large, partly owing to the official visit of the District President, W. K. Bishop, and it also being the night set apart for the election of officers. Arch Druid Bro Berrill presided. Three new members were initiated and one proposed. The halt yearly balance sheet was read, which proved extremely gratifying to the members, as it showed the Lodge to be in a thoroughly sound position, something like 200 being in the credit balance of the two funds afterpayment of all accounts. The election of officers resulted as follows : Arch Druid, Bro Past Arch 0. M. Gardener ; Vice Arch Druid, Bro Geo Mason ; Treasurer Bro T. C. Barnard ; Secretary, Bro H. S. Horn ; M S. Bro Gayfer ; A.D. Barbs, Armstrong and Zabell ; V.A. Barbs, Bros A, Eddie and Niooll; J.G., Bro Greathead ; O.G. Bro Erickson ; Auditor, Bro Gayfer; Trustee, Bro Geo Yule. The various officers were duly installed by the District President, the beautiful ceremony being most ably rendered by him. Bro Bishop then congratulated the Lodge upon their choice of officers, remarking that they wore especially fortunate in again having Bro Gardener as their Arch Druid. Bro Gardener in reply said he felt very deeply the great honor the brethren had conferred upon him in electing him as their A.D. that evening. It being the third occasion upon which he had been elected to the office, he felt the more proud as it convinced him that he still retained the utmost confidence of the brethren. It was his intention to do his best lot the good of the Lodge, to endeavour to promote harmony amongst the members, and to increase the strength of the members' roll, and he looked for the co-operation of the brethren. He trusted the Lodge would at all times work in harmony with kindred societies, ns they were nearly all working for the same noble objects., viz., assisting one another, and striving with a philanthropic system to relieve sickness and distress. Votes of thanks were passed to the outgoing officers, and also to D.P. Bro Bishop for his ever-ready assistance towards the good of Drnidism. The receipts of the evening were £l4. The Lodge was closed in the usual Druid’s onstom.
