"More High Jinks."
Wellington, despite the cry of “ hard times,” is bound to be gay and festive. The citizens are going to give Admiral Tryon a grand reception. There is to be a big ball on a scale of grandeur hitherto nnparalleled. The last big ball in Wellington cost L 725 18s, but this new affair is to be on a more extensive scale, and will probably tot np to about LIOOO. Then the sailors of Admiral Tryon’s ship, the Nelson, are to have a picnic in the country and be entertained right royally by the good folks of the Empire City. We were wondering why the Wellington folks were so eager to spend their money in entertaining Admiral Tryon. Bat “ the eat has been let ont of the bag ”by Mr E. T. Gillon, the Editor of the Post, who at a recent meeting in connection with the affair naively remarked “ that Wellington had a great interest in entertaining Admiral Tryon and creating a favorable impression upon bim, since the settlement of the naval head quartets of New Zealand rested with that gentleman to a great extent.” Just so. That's the way the oat jumps. The Wellington bigwigs want their port to be the naval bead quarters of New and so tfaey are prepared to spend LIOOO to entertain the gallant Admiral, who has practically the settlement of the matter in his hands. That is human nature all over. The Wellington folks want something from Admiral Tryon, and so they are going to try if a little flummery and indirect bribery will’prove efficacious in making him amenable to their wishes. We sincerely hope they will succeed in their object of getting Wellington made the naval bead quarters of the colony. An expenditure of LIOOO on tomfoolery to secure such a benefit would not be thrown away. But the ball promoters will look foolish indeed if they spend their money and get nothing for it.
