The Fires in the Napier District.
WIDESPREAD DISTRESS. Napier, jan i. The latest news from the bush shows that the fires are still spreading. This afternoon McKenzie’s large mill, near Danevirke, is reported as in imminent danger, and only a change of wind can save it. If the wind, which is now light, increases, as it threatens it is almost absolutely certain that all the remainder of the township of Makatoka, Ormondville, Norsewood andPapatu must go. There is widespread distress, which the Charitable Aid Board is endeavoring to relieve temporarily. Subscription lists have been opened to assist deserving cases. Later.
The bush fires at Makatoka and Norsewood have spread alarmingly. The loss suffered by the settlers from the destruction of houses, crops, fencing. &c,, is very distressing, many of them having escaped with barely their clothes.
