The Finances of New South Wales.

New Squill Wales (writes an Australian correspondent) has had to listen to , doleful story fr. in her Premier and Tiea„ur«.i. Mr Dibbs. U-‘ uau to speak of shrinkages in revenue in the two most important hr inches of revenue. Land sales receipts were ; liort of the estimate over half a million. Well might Mr Dihhs term it “ this disastrous year of 1856.” The total deficit for the year is over a million, the Soudan expedition having helped to swell it by £150,000. But no fresh taxation is proposed. The deficit will be covered by the issue of Treasury bills Next year things are expected to be mote rosy. The revenue, Mr Dibba estimates, will rise by nearly as much as it fell in 1885. He thinks he will receive £784,642 more than in 1875, and after providing for expenditure, he calculates on a surplus of just upon a quarter of a million. It is to be hoped that his expectations will coma true. Bnt that will very much depend on the skies, which were very unkind to New South Wales in 1883 and and 1884. Previous to the rains of January, 1886, there had been an unexampled wrought, daring the prevalence of which the Colony lost over 300,000 hones, nearly a million and a hall ef cattle, and thirteen and a half millions of sheep. Add to all thie, that wool had fonnd a falling market, and surely there is no wonder New South Wales settlers have had to purchase hall a million’s worth less of land, and patronise the rail and tram to a less extent by a quarter of a million than they were expected to.
