The tender of J. Dawson, £1136, has been accented for thu erection of the Mastcrtmi Borough Gas Works.
That beautiful rose Marechal Neil is :n sor.ia parts of England exempt from the canker which elsewhere has killed so many specimens. On the continent of Europe also there are trees of marvellous size of this favourite variety. At Montserrat, where roses form floral archways of large dimensions, prominent m one of these is a Marechal Neil which exhibits no signs of canker, and yet grows in the most luxuriant manner. The girth of one of its branches is t foot 8 inches —more than 6 inches diameter! "The most extrandinary vision of all. however, is a cloth of gold rose, which has taken possession of a tubular shaped cork tree. The rose hat clambered up its support so luxuriantly as to kill it, and stid thirsting for further conquests has thrown out branches to the neighbouring trees. The girth of the thickest stem is ift. roin.
