Latest American Invention. VICTORY OF_ELECTRICITY. I OINCE Electricity has been applied for lighting puri poses, all efforts of inventors have been directed : to construct a lamp for general domestic use. The i reason why this problem has till now not been solved, i is that none of the inventors could rid themselves of 1 the idea of gas lighting, and that all have adhered to the system of producing the Electricity in some cen--1 tral place, or by large machinery, instead of first laying down the principle that a Lamp which should ever become generally useful and popular, must be portable, like an Oil Lamp, and contain the generator of Electricity in itself, i. c., in the foot of the Lamp. The Norman Electric Light Co. has at last succeeded in completely realizing this ideal of Electric Lighting, and there is no doubt that this most important invention will bring about a complete revolution in all brunches of lighting. Our Electric Lamp needs neither Machinery, Conductors, nor any expensive outlay, and is neither complicated, nor disagreeable in manipulation; all that is necessary is to refill it every four or five days with acid. The cost of lighting will he as cheap as gas (J cents per hour), and it has before the latter the 1 immense advantage of neither producing heat, smoko ! nor carbonic acid, owing to which the air is not impared, and remains at the same degree of temperature. It is further, absolutely inodorous, and does not need to be kindled by match, or otherwise, but simply by turning the key, thus avoiding all danger of fre, explosion or suffocation, as in the case of gas, if the key is left' open ; and it must be conceded that this advantage alone is invaluable. It is further preferable to any known kind of lighting for the following reasons : (1.) Its manipulation is so simple that any child can keep it in.order. (3.) That the Lamp is portable, and can be removed like any Oil Lamp, from oneplaco to another; (3.) That it neither requires the disagreeable living of (he wick, or the cleaning of the cylinder, as in tho case of Oil Lamps. li.) That the light produced is a soft add moat steady one; that it never flickers, and tho flame, though being equal in power of lighting to gas, can bo regulated to any degree. (o.) That every danger of Arc is absolutely excluded, as tho light will extinguish immediately, if by any accident the glass surrounding the burner should be broken. (fi.) That it will burn, even in the strongest wind, completely unaffected, thus being invaluable for illuminations, lighting of gardens, corridors, etc. This Lamp is constructed for tho present m three different sizes A, small size. Height ofcomplete Lamp, 14inches; w eight, about 5 pounds t for lighting rooms, cellars, storage houses, powder magazines (or similar places where explosives are kept), coaches, illuminations, gardens, mines, or any other industrial purpose.
