Featherston Cricket Club.

To the Editor of the Standard

Sir,— ln perusing the Wellington and Wairarapa newspapers I find the various Cricket Clubs have held their geueral meeting* and elected officers, Ac,, lor the ensuing year, and the Treasurers’ reports produced (without an exception), shows a good balance in hand to commence operations with for the present season. 1 also find the success of these clubs is attributed to tho energetic way the Secretaries and Treasurers have carried out their duties. Surely Mr Editor this is not always the caee ; at the same time I should like to know the cause of the Featherston Cricket Club being almost defunct the past year or two, and bids fair of being the same this. Upon enquiry I find this Club has about ten pound’s worth of cricketing tools, so it cannot be for the want of utensils to work with. By-the-by, Mr Editor, I have a faint recollection of reading a report in last Wednesday’s issue of the Waibabapa Standard that a deputation (headed by the Secretary) waited upon the Town Board for the purpose of ascertaining if they had any town reserves available for cricketing purposes; the answer, I understand,, given by the Chairman, was, they had not, as tfio ground offered to and refused by the' Club, is now leased, so probably the ground, question is the means of Featherston not being able to form a Club, and yet I fail tosee that, as 1 heard on good authority, two or three days ago, a gentleman leasing soma town acres, is willing to allow the cricketer# the use of them, if they will condescend to ask him. I am afraid there arc too many petty, grievances afloat for a Cricket Club or any thing else to exist in Featherston. In conclusion let me add if another general meeting, is called—and a Club likely to be formed—be careful who you select as officebearers, for you may depend upon it, an energetic Secretary is necssary to the prosperity and success of a Cricket Club.

I am, &c., Cover Point, Featherstno, September 15, 1885.
