A Thriving Industry.

Wo have received a sample from Mr F. Maxton, of Greytowu. of the Now Zealand mullet prepare ! by Messrs Masefield and Sims, of Kaipara, Auckland. When we consider that 1-irge quantities id canned fish are imported into the colony every year we hail with pleasure such a new local industry as as tho canning of the fish in New Zealand waters. The colony spends, in the importation of potted and preseived fish, about £ Id,ooo annually ; the amount so expended in loss, taking the importers’valuation being blHfill!. May the time soon arrive when the bulk of tile above sn.n shall he kept in the Co ony. in the development of our local trade. We are glad to hear that the New Zealand mullet as put upon tho market hy the above linn has now gained a considerable hold. Dm mg the last 12 months it is c-timatid that clo-c upon d 0 000 lbs of these fish have toon e-imied nod sold in the c hmy ;'1 he'■ cannery," ns it is termed, is situated at Helensvilie, on the banks of the Kiiwa River, a little over HO miles to the H"i;li of Auckland, and connected with that

city by rail, so that a rapid and comparatively cheap means for the transit of the Company’s products has been seemed by the adoption of this site. Fish are abundant in the Kaipnra River, and mullet—ouo of the best, if not the best fish in New Zealand waters—are so plentiful that the water is described as being thick with them. The supply, according to the opinion of experts, is illimitable, and not only could this colony be supplied, but a large export trade might be carried on without any danger of affecting the quantity obtainable. We can testify to tiie excellence of the fish, and recommend our readers to patronise it in preference to the imported article.
