Greytown Borough Roads.

A TOUR OF INSPECTION. On Tuesday last, some members of the Borough Council, cunshting of his Worship the Mayor (H. Udy, jun,,Esq.,) Councillors Maxtou, Cameron, and St George, acting upon a wise resolve made at their meeting on Thursday night of last week, made a tour of inspection over all the principtl roads of the town, and in the rear of that important body m’ght be seen a " Chic I among them takin’ notes.’’ Well, to go to business, it wHi be as well to note that tho Greytown Main Road was the first traverse i, aad to any person n.d a now chum in the Wainirapi it would ho needless to relate that our put main road is almost without a blemish from the American Coach Factory upwards There are about leu chains more or less "f troublesome metal between that spot and the m.-wiy station, and that is about all itui faulty parts to b; found, save at the other ond of tho town near the bridge. The Mono a Road to Kemptou’s corner is in very fair condition, hut the timber wagons arc heavy upon it. There are, however, very few really bad places. Tho road beyond Hampton's bush has recently been undergoing some extensive improvements ; culverts and ditches have been made ; the road has been metalled, and next year it may be our province to record that this road ranks among som> of the best under .the control of the corporation. Tim road round the corner, opposite Mr Cross’s residence was not inspected. Whether this was because the Councillors thought that they might get bogged or because they considered it would take too much money to repair, our reporter did not learn. Pafawai Road. The Papawai road is just now causing some temporary anxiety and embarrassment to tho Council ; tho road itself is not bad, speaking generally, but in many cases it might ba improved. Tho Council will put through a substantial culvert at the spot where the present culvert is situate, a little this side of Mr Vatuham’s ; in this undertaking Messrs Varnham and Heckler pay half the cost. Mr Heckler is building a uice roomy house near this spot, and the residence, when finished, will initiate a progressive step towards the undoubted importance which this road will one day assuredly assume. The greatest trouble iu this direction is tho ford through the creek, which is used to get to Collier’s, York’s, Terry’s, Curtis' and a number of other settlers. As wo suppose they pay rates, they certainly must get a road to their homes. This the Borough Council fully recognise, and are anxious to remedy ; but to make and form a road where the Council have a right to make it, would coat money, and the coffers of the Council not at present overflowing with that necessary, consequently there is the hitch. But one thing can be done—if the land holders of the site of the present accommodation ford will guarantee the use of the spot for any leagth of time, the governing body of our town will immediately proceed to get filled in the approach at this side of tho creek, sufficient boulders to put an extinguisher ou the quagmire of about three feet in depth, that horses now wade through bv taking an abrupt drop of about three feet from the crown of the bauk. Our reporter went iu for an experiment with his horse, and could breathe more freely when he became extricated. The old temporary in a “ slantingdicular" direction, is still there, where washed by the flood, but scarcely safe for a foot passenger to cross.

Humphries Road. This is one of the happy streets on which a Councillor delights to dwell, ana of course this locality has been well considered, for the road is good though the traffic is not extensive. Of course the Woodsido people require the road, and as it is their road principally to the town, and they don't count a legion, the neighborhood should not trouble the Town Council for a considerable time. Kempton STREET. There is a street in this unvn, called Kempton street, and car reporter noticed that when the municipal chariot passed the end of that street, the memba., of the Corporation, had their attention ri .otted m.. firmly in another direction. W bdi ■ ..,.s road is a private road, and shou. i .magma will remain “ strictly private ” for all time, until it is formed fit for traffic. Wo have met with people who have attempted to live on this street, but they have come, and like shadows have departed. West Street. This street will not want metalling for some time. The metal oi the lower side would stand a fair chance of being firmly trodden in about the middle of the next decade. The traffic is small and a person troubled with corns would require to make a short cut across a pad'look. Kuuixiwhiti Run. This, like Humphries line, has an advantage ; an important member os the corporation goes this way home. Li > w.ml Ihe very remiss, if he did not endeavor to m ik.i ibis a model road ; it is very goo 1 no i, y.n *.-. six Hawkes' gate. After that, it r q in.-- at 4 tending to ; this road will vc.y irnuiv require a footpath. Hastwem. and Church Sir.u r-. These two small streets me in gool order. Great Erkdkrick Sjukk-i. This street so tar as it is formed, is in lair fettle, but as them will bo thorily some good residences bore, notably Mr Cell's, a footpath would bo an acquisition. Probably that luxury will be reserved for brighter days. East Street. Like West street the metal here will last a considerable time; there is a b"d place ue .r Heagerty’s gate at ibo extreme cad. Taking one consideration with another, our streets favorably compare with I hose of some other towns. It is very easy to make invidious comparisons, but we do not intend to do it. We may say this—that with the comparatively little means at their command the Corporation have done their very best for their fellow ratepayers, and without any attempt at 11 buttering,” we think that the borough is to be congratulated on this fact. If they have not got a talking body, they have ft practical one, and what some councils, (not in the Wairanpa), possess in wind, our eivio representatives possess in good solid judgment. So let those grumble who do not do the work.
