Contractors’ Deposits.

To the Editor uf the Standard. Sib, —Seeing an adveri- rn-n f in your paper abont six weeus ago. that u l-r- were invited by the Public Works Dep.i>tm-nt for alterations and additions to the Police Station at Carterton, I went up to look at it, and subsequently sent in a tender to the Minister of Public \Vorka, Wellington, with a deposit of £5. Not any more of it lor nearly three weeks, I made enquiries and found that the job had been let and signed for, about a week previous. I then wrote to the Assistant Engineer re my deposit ; ha replied that if I applied to the Public Works Office at Mastertoa I should get it. I did so, and Mr Oliver sent me word that I must go up to Masterton and sign for it before I could receive it. This I declined to do. seeing that I should lose half a day, besides train fare, tunning after my own money. I received this deposit on May 13, about a month after the job was signed for. Low, Mr Editor, I think such delay is unnecessary. Certainly, the sum was small but if it bad been more it would have been all the same. I thlmk these deposits should be sent back at once, as soon as contract is signed for, without having to make application for them, as the department must know who sent them. By inserting the above you will oblige Yours, Ac., A CoKIBACrOB.
