The amount of rates outstanding was declared to be £383 11s lOd, but this amount did not represent genuine liabilities in many oases, being rated in error or overated, other amounts being charged to imaginary persons. Mr H. K. Bunny -aid, the question was were the Board willing to lose £350. It was not fair that the Koad Board funds should be appropriated to sustain tho Biidge when all the County reaped tho benefit of tfiesame, Mr Bunny said personally he objected to the toll, but it was utterly unfair that the Boad Board funds should foiieft £350, ho was souy to oppose tho motion, bat was compelled to do so.

Mr Braithwaite said the road was opeu to all the public. Mr Booth said that although the Roads and Bridges Act was not passed at the time the bridge was in course of erection. Mr Pharazyn was under the impression that the same could be brought under the operation of the said Act; but the Colonial Treasurer subsequently informed that gentleman that it was impossible to do so, as the bridge was practically finished before the Act came into force. Still Mr Pharazyn was under the impression that a promise had been made until so informed.

The Board divided on the question. Ayes, Messrs Booth, Braithwaite, Grace and Gallon. Noes, Messrs Parker, Callister, Bunny, Dorset and the Chairman. The motion was therefore lost. Mr Bunny said Mr King had taken some trouble, and his charge was considered lower than the Government had paid. Mr Booth said Mr King was likely shortly to qualify himself as a licensed surveyor, and then his services would be of still more value to the Board.

The Chairman said that perhaps it would be as well to confer with some other bodies before coming to a decision.

It was resolved that the Chairman get an opinion from some proper authority, and that the matter bo allowed to stand over till tho next meeting.

Tho Chairman, in answer to Mr Bunny, said that Mr King was asked to tender by resolution of the Board.

WORK ON DALEFIELD ROAD, Mr Price attended to make application for work to be done between the station and Hart’s line. Mr Price said he would give LlO, or if the Board would refund last year’s rates, and forego the ensuing rates, ho would do it himself. There was 'about ten chains of tho road that wanted repairing badly.

Mr Booth said the road was in charge o) the local bean'.

Mr Price arid that just below tho bridge there was a large end dangerous gutter. Mr Gallon ol ie-.ted to any work being done on that road. Thu road was as good as any other iu Iris w.rd; aud he (Mr Gallon) considered the roads at Matarawa much worse ; the ratepayers would object to any money being spent on this road, Mr Gallon said ho was there s'x weeks ago with Mr King aud he could see quite ten chains, tho read was not so bad.

Mr Booth said, they could not do anything, if, Mr Gallon, being the warden, objected. Mr Price said the drain should be cleared out.

The Chairman said that Mr Hart had received orders to attend to that place. Mr Booth said if Mr Price would only move his fence, perhaps Mr Gallon would withdraw his objection.
