THE PRINCE OF WALES AT DUBLIN. RUMOURED ILLNESS OF THE POPE. SERIOUS PALL IN CONSOLS AND RUSSIAN STOCKS. TONQUIN TO BE EVACUATED BY THE FRENCH.
London, April 9. His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales, replying to an address of welcome presented to him at Dublin, expressed the hope that bis present visit would not be the last one he was able to pay to Ireland. A persistent rumor has gained ground to the effect that his Holiness the Pope is suffering from illness, but so fat the report lacks definite confirmation. Russian stocks have fallen 10 per cent. Consols have also fallen 11 per cent. The French paper, Bosphote Egyptienne, says it is supposed that M. Floquot will succeed M. Henri Brisson as President of the Chamber of Deputies. The French troops will evacuate Ton quin on 16th May. The French blockade of Formosa will be raised to-morrow.
Arrived —Ada Melmore, from Port Chalmers ; Glenmore, from Wellington ; and Euterpe, from Napier. Consols have to-day declined from 97H to 95, a panic having occured on the Stock Exchange, owing to the present political uneasiness. His Holiness the Pope, who has been * seriously indisposed, is now making good progress towards recovery. His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales, who has been an active member of the English Royal Commission on the housing of the working classes, has paid a visit to the slums of Dublin, in order to ascertain the condition of the lower quarters of that city by personal observation. A great Indian rising is feared in Northwest Canada.
The meat cargoes by the lonic from New Zealand, and the Liguria from Australia, are selling at Od per lb.
