The University Boat Race was won by Oxford.

The annual treat and distribution of prizes in connection with the Kaitara school takes place on Thursday next.

Friday next being Good Friday the Standard will not be published on that day. The children attending the Pnrkvale school 1 about 150 in number, spent a very enjoyable day last Thursday at a pleasant spot near the Hurunui bridge. After feasting and playing the party returned to the school where some valuable prizes were awarded to successful competitors. Messrs R. Fairbrother and C. Deibl are to be complimented on the success which attended their efforts, the children having thoroughly enjoyed themselves. A dance in the evening finished up the day’s pleasure.

The election of members for the Maori Committee under the Maori Committee’s Act, is proceeding to-day at the Court House, Greytown. Mr Mauusell is officiating as Returning Officer. It is expected that the great Maori meeting at Greytown will take place on Wednes ■ day next, when the Hon Mr Ballance is expected to be present. His Excellency the Governor has returned to Wellington.

Mr H. H. Jackson has informed us that the black ant, so destructive to fowls, always arrives in this district about the beginniag of April. It has alreauy put m its appearance, so it behoves all owners of poultry to take precautionary measures.

The Martinborough School Committee are going to give their scholars and the children and their friends in the district, a treat and picnic at Otaria, on Easter Monday. As the forthcoming outing is being looked forward to with feelings of pleasing anticipation, it is to bo hoped the day will prove auspicious for the occasion.

At Mr Baillie’s saw mill on Saturday a valuable tram horse was killed through the chain of a skid breaking, while rolling a log on the beach. The log fell back upon the animal and mutilated him in a terrible manner, so much so that the horse had to be destroyed.
