Teetotallers v. Publicans.
There has been a vigorous fight iu Wellington between the Teetotallers and the Publicans on the 10 o’clock closing hour question. In the Thorndon District all the publican candidates were elected, the teetotallers being beaten. In the Lambton district, the whole of the five candidates on the Teetotal ticket were rejected, and the other five put forward by the Publicans were elected. In the Te Aro District the Publican’s did not score quite so complete a victory, as they had four out of the five candidates elected whom they had put forward—tho other candidate elected being Mr Fraser, a teetotaller. As we write the contest in the Cook district is going on. The teetotal party have better hopes of success in this district but how far these may prove well founded remains to bo seen. It appears likely that from the composition of the licensing com mittees elected, the 12 o’clock closing hour fur hotels will be adopt id in Wellington. That circumstance is to be regretted, as an earlier closing hour waul 1 have boon preferable. Tho idea of eleven o’clock ns a closing hour for all hotels meets favor iu the minds of moderate people.
