Mr Ballance and the Natives.

In recently commenting upon Mr Ballanee’s speech to the natives at Banana, we pointed out that the hon gentlemen had been more plausible than honest, and sincere in bis statements. On this point the Canterbury Press remarks :—“ The natives present at the Banana meeting are sure to have gone away with the impression that in nearly every respect their wishes are about to be complied with, and when they find later on—as they probably will—that they have been mistaken, dissatisfaction will be the inevitable result. A distinct and unmistakeable avowal of the intentions of the Government might not, on that occasion, have elicited so much enthusiasm, but it would have been more successful in the long ran. The fewer such gatherings as the one at Banana Mr Ballanoe attends the better it will be both for the Europeans and the Natives.
