Yesterday morning a young woman was knocked down by the locomotive as it was descending the summit, but she fortunately sustained no serious injury. As however a number of cases of personation are reported it is by no means certain which of the two candidates is elected.

An inquest was held on Tuesday at Peatherstou, on the body of a man fonnd on Monday in the river bed of the Tauherenikan. The body was very much decomposed, and had evidently lain there a considerable time. It was beyond identification, but in the coat pocket was found a certificate of discharge from the barque Malay, dated Wellington, 7th October last, giving hearer a good character, and stating his name as James Burnes, aged 19, native of Dumfries. We are glad to announce the coming of Mdlle. Charbonnett, the world renowned Pianiste, and Miss Neville, a talented vocalist; this will enable our musical friends to hear at the same time music ot the most refined character, and singing of the sweetest description. At the meeting; of the Education Board on Wednesday Mr Lee mentioned that he had held over last mouth’s cheque to Mr Armstrong as he was informed that he had been absent lor seven half days during the month. Mr Armstrong had been dismissed by the Board, receiving three months’ notice, and this was the last payment due to him. Mr Lee read a letter received from Mr T. Hutchison (solicitor), demanding payment or threatening legal proceedings. After a brief discussion it was settled that Mr Lee should see the local committee when in Carterton shortly. We received yesterday afternoon a fall report of the meeting of Wairarapa East County Council which was held at Masterton on Wednesday last. The officers under the old Council were re-appointed, Mr Beetham, the County Chairman being also appointed Treasurer. The question of raising a loan of £SOOO was postponed to a special meeting to be held on the 14th proximo. The meetings of the two County Councils being held on the same day has prevented us from giving so full a report of the one, and so early a report of the other as we could wish; but we trust we shall be able to remedy these defects in future.

His Excellency the Governor has fixed and appointed that the siftings of the District Court shall be held as follows:—At Greytown, in the Resident Magistrate’s Courthouse, for the despatch of Civil business only, ion the fourth Friday in each of the months Ot January, March, May, July, September, and November in each year. At Masterton, in the Resident Magistrate’s Courthouse, for the despatch of Civil business only, on the first Friday iu each of the months of February, April, June, August, October, and Decemder in each year. Provided that in case any of the days so fixed as aforesaid shall happen to be a Sunday or holiday, then the Court appointed for that day shall be tiolden on the first day thereafter not being a holiday. An importaht decision was given in the Court of Appeal at Wellington on Wednesday. At the last sittings of the Napier Circuit Court, Audersou, of the firm of Hardy and Anderson, was found guilty of embezzling the monies of tho firm when the ease was reserved by Mr Justice Richmond for the consideration of the Court. It appears that Hardy the copartner lived away from the scene of operations which were under the direction of the prisoner. The latter received a cheque on behalf of the firm, which he appropriated to bis own use. Mr Justice Johnston said I think we must take it as found here by the jury that the prisoner received this money on account of the co-partnership and that he did such an act with regard to that money as would have been embezzlement before the statute if he had not been a co-partner, and that brings him within the Larceny Act, which says that if the facts support it it is open for the jury to find a verdict of not guilty of larceny, but guilty of embezzlement. In this case it seems a verdict of not guilty of larceny has not been entered. It ought no doubt to have been entered, but I think we may assume no question arises upon that, so that all we have to decide is whether the verdict of guilty of embezzlement entered according to the statute is a good verdiot under the provisions of the statute. 1 think it is, and that the conviction should be supported. Mr Justice Gillies and Mr Justice Williams were also of opinion that the conviction should stand. Conviction ordered to stand accordingly. Some of the boys of Carrolville, Wis., made a midnignt parade, wrapped in sheets, and starting from the village graveyard. Their idea was to scare whoever saw them. They succeeded. Three women went into convulsions at the sight* one sick man was thro vn into a relapse, and a girl broke her arm by a fail in climbing hastily over a fence.
