MASTERTON HIGHWAY BOARD.

A meeuno of the Board waa held.on March 23fd..'Present- Messrs Vallanoe (Chairman) Bennett, Dorset, Buchanan, and Butberfurd. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. The following letters were also read: — One from the Clerk of the Castle Point Board, enquiring if Mr Snowdon had been engaged by the Board to layoff aline of road -from Alfredto to join the Castle-point-Tirau-mea line on Tiranmea river.

One from D. Donald wishing to know what resolution the Board had passed regarding Mr Meredith’s protest re the line of road laid off to Uriti.

One from the Chairman of the Wairarapa East Council, stating that it waa of the utmost importance that the Mangapaketaa road should be proceeeded with at once, so as not to run the risk of losing the £3,060 voted for it, and suggesting that the Board should appoint Mr King, their Engineer, at a fair salary, and that immediately on being appointed he should at once lay off the line, which would be paid for by the County Council at a certain sum per mile sufficient to recoup the Board.

One from Mr £. Meredith, as to certain repairs required in 6 Ward. One from Mr Griffin, stating that he would wait on the Board relative to the line of road through his property. One from the Secretary to the Treasury, stating that the sum of £69614s 4d had been paid into the bank to the credit of tbe Board.

Tbe Engineer’s report was given in and read.

The Chairman appointed Messrs Alpass, Smith, and Wilsoue presiding officers to conduct the election of Wardens for the several Wards of the district.

Mr D. MoLachlan attended and requested the Board to assist him in falling.about an acre of bush on the Bangitnman Una of rood. Mr Griffin also attended with reference to the line of road through his property. Mr Holmes attended, and requested that someIking more might be done to the MatahhrT road before the wet weather' set in. Messrs. Cockbnrn, Allen, and Colway also attended as to tbe improvement of the Lower

That the Board aceed to Mr M'Langhlan’a request as to the failing of bosh on tbs Bangitumau line.

That Mr King be appointed engineer to the Board for 12 months from Ist April, next, at a salary of £412, and that the first work ha undertake be the laying off of the **—g-p* keha road.

That two or more of the members of the Board inspect the proposed line of road throuSh Mr Griffin’s property at Upper Manaia on Saturday the 90th inst., at 2 pun. and that the Clerk give notice to Mr Woodroffe to attend.

That the Engineer endeavor to annngs with the persons who earned cat the last contract on the Matahiwi road, for the remaining work, and that, as soon as p-rrHf. he lay off a line of road from the Upper to the Lower Taueru, through Mr Kaye’s property, and that he also lay off a line of toad through Messrs Bonnet and McKenaio’s property in the Taueru Block. That an alteration be made on the line at road from the Koroma gate -thwiogli Mr Buchanan’s property, to the boundary of Messrs Beetham’s.

That another person be employed on the Wainniorn line for a time. ThatMr Entherfmd be, authorised to expend the sum of £3O voted some time ago by the Board for repairs in No 1 Ward. That as the term for which the Wardens for the several Wards of the district expiree before the next ordinary meeting, the Board 'decline to undertake any fresh' work, bob recommend the new Board at its first meeting to carry out the works applied for by Messrs Meredith. Hood, Coekbnre, Allan, and Colway, and also the proposed deviation on the Taueru rood.

That the secretary write to Mr Mnnißfh and request him to give his reasons lot pentesting against the line of road laid off through his property at Driti; sad that he also write to Mr Donald and inform him that nothing had been done as to Ur Mereditii'a protest, but that on the Board receiving his reply he would be informed of its tenor. That the secretary also write to the Castle Board and inform them that Mr. Snowden was not engaged by the Board to lay -off a road from Alfred ton to Ttraumea, and recommend them to apply to the Chief Surveyor to allow him to tay off the portion in tter district.
