WAIRARAPA HOSPITAL

(To the Editor of the Standard.)

Sib, —The time is approaching for the appointment of custodian and for the hospital, and I have no doubt there will be a great many applications. Therefore I would respectfully suggest to the Committee the advisability of enquiring into the characters of any applicants that may have been in service as married couples in the district, more especially as to their predisposition to habits of economy in the necessaries of life or otherwise ; as it is very evident a wasteful and extravagant matron cm make the housekeeping expenses for the year amount to far more than a careful and prudent one would, and with the almost unlimited supplies at their command. This I think ia worth consideration. I think that with strange applicants at least the Committee ought' to insist upon their producing a character from their late employers, in the district if practicable, and not depend upon the (perhaps) spurious characters they may produce from emj 1 jyers in England or elsewhere. Trusting yon will find space for this, I remain, <frc., SUBSCBIBEB TO HOSPITAL.
