[FROM Otni OWN CORRESPONDENIj. Wellington, May 11, 9/24 a.m. Tricker will be released this morning. Much satisfaction ha* been expressed at this result, A largely attended public meeting was held last night, Mr. Waring Taylor in the chair, to consider the lu 4 means of establishing an efficient lino between Melbourne and San Francisco calling at 'Wellington ana Honolulu. Several gentlemen spoke, showing the advantages derivable by New Zealand from the adoption of this route. The following resolution was proposed by Ma. Edward Pearce and seconded by Mr. Gleorge Hunter: —“That it is of the greatest importance to this Colony that a regular monthly mail steam service should be established between Melbourne and San Francisco, the vessels calling at Wellington and Honolulu. It is proposed that the service be performed by steamers of larger size, and sufficient power and proper accomodation for a considerable number of passengers, and ample room for cargo. The contract is to be entered'into with parties known to havesuitable steamers under their control, and able to give a guarantee that the service will be effectually carried out. A large committee was appointed to take energetic steps for promoting the object Messrs Pharazyn and Rhodes, being about visiting Melbourne, and Fitzher- | bert now there, were appointed as a deputation to wait upon the Melbourne , Chamber of Commerce, with the view ; of urging upon the Victorian GovernI ment to support this service. Webb’a ! line will undertake what is required for £160,000. Half will be borne by the United States, leaving £BO,OOO for ' distribution between Australia and New Zealand. Mr Beauchamp, tho Morraou Elder, made his final appearance on Monday. After delivering a lecture, he enterj ed into a discussion with Mr E. Tmro. ' ath, who completely- demolished him. , The Mormon resorted to abuse and I disgusting language. - He is not likely to appear again.
