THE ALFREDTON TOWNSHIP.
(TO the editob. of the mercury.) Sir, —How is the Province to prosper ? A. istriet is set apart for Small Farms, the ind is mapped, a very pretty geographic* licturc is made, the land is sold, but without road, how are the settlers to progress ? 'hey have all paid for the land, -which they annot occupy for want of a road. The merners of Council managed to get placed upon he estimates £SOO for a road, and there it emains. Private individuals, at an enormous ost to themselves, cut a track through the rild bush country, a portion of which passes hrough land possessed by the Natives' Ithough these gentlemen use the roal oade by the Settlers, yet they have the assurnee to demand £IOOO, and I a-Jj given to uir lerjtand the Anting Superintendent and 'rovincial Secretary promised Mr. Rutherfurd hat this matter should be attended to, and he G-ovcrament Surveyor, at present at lasterton, should survey the line, to see its uitabiiity; but this, like the £SOO, is all moke. How is the Province to prosper? I am, Sir, &e., Joseph Masters. . LNQTHEE CURE FOE MILITIA MEN T(TO THE EDITOR OF THI-. ' MERCURY.') Sir, —I would suggest, in addition to the Hire proposed by "An iCx-Volunteer," anoher course to be nursued with regard to thosevho slirik the Mi'itia parades. Let them all, ■xceot those who cannot move off their beds, ittend the parades, and be mustered, like an Lwkward squad, apart Irom the rest. Many who have obtained certificates are trong, hale, hearty men —apparently—and I im quite sure all would be glad to see of vhat elass the Wairarapa lame, halt, and sick, ire composer". Then let no one be absent from parade, | ixcept those whom a doctor's certificate states > ire unable to walk ; and we shall see a lot jathcred together that will surprise many— ■ i lot of men whom I believe a recruiting icrgeant would not refuse for the army in England. ■ I am, sir, &c., An Ex-Militia Man.
