OTOROHANGA NEWS

TOPICS OF THE HOUR. INCREASED PASSENGER TRAFFIC. (Our Resident Representative.) Mr W. Moorman, stationamster at Otorohanga, reports increased passenger traffic during the last month from the Otorohanga station, and that the trains conveying holiday-makers ran much more smoothly than in former years in his experience here. Among interesting holiday incidents, he was approached by a young man who arrived by an early train from Frankton Junction, who stated that he had forgotten to collect his “ roll ” which he had left under the mattress in the boarding house where he had spent the previous night at Frankton. He enlisted the services of the stationmaster to retrieve the missing £42. Mr Moorman rang the clerk at the Frankton station asking him to proceed to the boarding house in question and search for the money. By this means the money was recovered and duly handed to the thankful passenger. On arrival at Otorohanga last Sunday evening both doors of one of the crowded carriages of the train refused to open, despite the strenuous efforts of a number of passengers to open one or both of them. The result was that a number of Otorohanga residents, of both sexes, left the train through one of the windows. No one thought of using the communication cord—until after the rather undignified landing on the station platform. DEFENCE RIFLE CLUB. The Otorohanga Defence Rifle Club’s shooting competition on the local range was somewhat marred by a troublesome wind that blew throughout the afternoon. The best scores at 300 yards were:—Piko 90, C. Knox 89, R. Palmer 87, L. Palmer 87, B. Palmer 85, F. Hyde 83. HONIKIWI SPORTS. The annual sports at Honikiwi were held on New Year’s Day under favourable weather conditions, and in the presence of a large gathering of settlers, their families, and visitors from Otorohanga and Kawhia. The athletic events were keenly contested, and the various trophies won by contestants were presented during an interval of the dance in the evening. MOTORING ACCIDENT. While Mr S. J. Greenshields and party were returning to their Otorohanga home after an extensive motoring tour of the Auckland province, their car was badly wrecked in a drain within a hundred yards of their home, when slewing from the metal at the intersection of Hinewai and Te Kawa streets in order to avoid a head-on collision with a truck driven by Mr James. The occupants of the car fortunately escaped injury, other than the shock of the occurrence. VITAL STATISTICS. The following are the particulars of the registration of births, deaths and marriages in Otorohanga during 1935, the figures of the previous year being in parenthesis: Births, 94 (64); deaths, 17 (12); and marriages, 24 (27). A. & P. SHOW. The Otorohanga Agricultural and Pastoral Association will hold its annual show on the Island Reserve recreation grounds this year, and comprehensive arrangements are now in train to stage this popular fixture. The valuable cups offered in the various sections and classes are already on display in the main street, and the schedules will be printed this week. TENNIS TOURNAMENT. The annual tournament of the Waitanguru Tennis Club on Boxing Day drew a very large gathering of district settlers and their families. The successful finalists were: Miss E. Dew and R. Thompson (6), who beat Miss M. Murray and V. Jury (scr) 50—39.
