GERMAN WOOL IMPORTS
HOWi EMBARGO AFFECTS NEW ZEALAND. LOWER PRICES RESULT. The embargo on wool from overseas countries imposed by (Jermany in 1934 has had a serious effect oh the price New Zealand has obtained for its wool. Mr Brun Beyer, of Berlin, a-wool buyer, who recently arrived in New Zealand, in an interview furnished interesting figures taken from, official German statistics, showing how the embargo has affected the importing of New Zealand greasy wools into Germany for corresponding periods of 1933-34 and 1934-5. “ The embargo on wool from overseas to Germany began in 1934,” said Mr Beyer, “ and wools could only be imported through a barter or compensation arrangement. “ Urn actual imports of New Zealand greasy wool into Gernfany for the periods referred to w r ere as follow:—< 1933-34 125,660 bales, 1934-35 8360 tales. “ On the other hand* those countries which had trading agreements or a large barter trade with Germany, like the Union of South Africa and the Argentine, benefited greatly by this. South Africa alone exported to Germany for the five months following the coming into operation of the trade treaty no less than 111,000 bales more than for the same period of the previous year. The Argentine shows a larger shipment to Germany, of 85,000 bales (New Zealand weight) as compared with the corresponding nine months of the year before. “ These two countries,. having a trading agreement with Germany not only benefited by the. greatly-in-creased shipments to my country, but also realised, on account of tne competition by Germany, on an average ebout 15 per cent more for their wool last season than the prices that were paid for similar qualities in New Zealand and Australia.”
