TOPICS OF THE HOUR. ITEMS OF INTEREST. (Our Resident Representative). The Rev. J. D. McFariane, formerly in charge or the Presbyterian circuit, with headquarters at Otorohanga, for several years, is renewing old friendships in this district. The Rev. McFariane is at present in charge of the Waipu parish (Northland), and has just completed a tour of the South Island. Mr C. J. Robieson, formerly of the Otorohanga platoon of Territorials, won the Territorial open championship at the Penrose range last week. He received his instruction in musketry at Otorohanga. Owing to the continued dry weather conditions the water at the reservoir, in the hills, which supplies the town, is becoming increasingly low, and the Town Board has, as a consequence, to cut off the supply at 6 o’clock each evening until further notice. The water is not only scarce in quantity, but is also of poor quality. The Otorohanga branch of the W.C.T.U. held a very successful “bring and tuy" stall on the occasion of the seventh birthday of the branch in the local Presbyterian Church. The election of officers was postponed until after the New Year. The result of the first round of the Culley trophy, on the Otorohanga Rifle Club’s range is as follows: — 200yds flange. — Keith Smith 39, C. Ifoaro 37, A. Annan 30, 'G. Palmer and Ohas Knox 35, T. Melville 34, P. J. Coull 31, B. Palmer 28, A. Cameron 28, C. Cameron 26, A. Graham 25, J. Pye 24, T. McCready 23 and Piko 22. The following havei been elected as tv.'ustees of the Oiiahiri Drainage Board, which operates over lands close to Otorohanga:—Messrs Allen Wj. Hood, William G. Johnston, Robert M. Mclnnes, William A. Spicer and Arthur B. St. Clair. Mr F. 0. R. Phillips is the returning officer for the Board.

The management of the Wfaitomo Caves Hostel reports a brisk tourist trade during recent weeks. At the meeting of the recentlyformed Otorohanga Rabbit Board, Mr Bilrdlaugh Symes (Puketotara) presided, and Messrs J. Williamson (Honikiwi), M. Cowley (Pirongia Road), H. E. Martin (Whawharua), W. G. Bonner (Te Kuiti), G. B. Melrose (Inspector at Te' Awamutu), and J. G. Wiynyard (secretary, Te Awamuku) were in attendance. Mr H. Ni. Sewell’s appointment as rabbit inspector was confirmed. The Board arranged for an overdraft of £230 at a local Bank. It was decided, on the motion of Mr Bonner, to make a thorough inspection of the area, so that a correct estimate of the poison required could be made. Mr J.

Dalziel is to be offered the appointment of assistant rabbiter. The chairman reported that a tender had been accepted for the provision of a hut for the rabbiter, the erected cost to be £36. It was decided to endeavour to purchase five acres on which the hut is to stand, if the Lands Department is prepared to sell at a nominal price. Poisoning will take, place in January next, and, whilst the trapping of rabbits is prohibited, settlers may make .application to the Board, in extreme cases, for permission to trap or shoot rabbits. The following ra}es were struck: —Honikiwi district and Hydes AreaTd, and the rest of the land under the jurisdiction of the Board 2d per acre.
