CHAMPION HEREFORD BULL

FOR NOTED GISBORNE STUD.

Best young bull in ENGLAND.

One of the most valuable and outstanding Hereford bulls that have yet left England is now in course of transit to New Zealand for Messrs Hutchinson Bros., of Gisborne. These breeders have one of the most notable herds yet developed in New Zealand, in proof of which are their many notable victories at leading shows outside of their own district in recent years, and the extraordinarily high average price secured by them, at their annual sales of bulls right through the period of the slump. Recognising that the high standard of their herd could be maintained only by importing the best blood obtainable in England, Messrs Wright, Stephenson, and Company, Ltd., were entrusted with a commission to secure the best bull in England regardles sof cost. Photogi’aphs and particulars of a. number of high-class bulls with leading show honours and of select, breeding were submitted, but, in view of the necessity to secure the best bull in England, negotiations were entered into with the leading English breeder and famous international judge, Mr Craig Tanner, to make the selection. .Mr Tanner is a brother of Mr A. J. Tanner, the wellknown Australian judge, who has imported man yhigh-class Herefords to Australia and assisted breeders there to modernise the Hereford breed. It is of interest to note that in order to place the requirements of Messrs Hutchinson Bros, clearly before Mr Craig Tanner, the overseas telephone service was requisitioned, and, while M*r C. E. Robertson was in Sydney, a telephonic communication with Mr Tanner at his home, Eyton-on-Severn, in Herefordshire, was arranged, and definite instructions conveyed to Mr Tanner of the neeesasry qualities in the sire to be purchased for Messrs Hutchinson Bros., in consideration of the outstanding merit of their herd. This is the first time that the overseas telephone has been requisitioned in New Zealand in connection with the purchase of a stud sire, and thus establishes a unique occurrence. As a result of the communication, MiTanner eventually selected and purchased the champion bull at the last English Hereford Society’s show and sale. This bull, Paunton Jamies, was bred in the famous herd of Mr W. J. Lock, Paunton Court, and is the second son of his great sire, Pershore Layman, to win the championship. He is a superb animial of the modern type, and should prove a wonderful acquisition to the Hereford breed in this part of the world. Paunton James was calved on 10th Octobei*, 1932. His sire, Pershore Layman, was himself first and reserve champion at the English ißdyal Show, and there is also the blood of the English royal champion Goodenough in his veins, so that Paunton James is truly royally bred. He comes also from one of the most valuable female lines in England. His dam, Louise 18th, is by Paunton Drummer, which also was a first-prize winner at the 1929 English Hereford Society’s show. A very high opinion is held of the inpnediate ancestors of Paunton James by Mr Raymond Reynolds, one of the best judges in Australia, who, Avlien in England some time ago, made a very careful inspection of all the leading herds. It is, therefore, apparent that Messrs Hutchinson Bros, have full ■Warranty for their investment of over four figures in securing Paunton James for their Gisborne herd. He is the highest-priced bull sold in England for many years. Paunton James, Messrs Wright, Stephenson, and Company advise, is due to arrive in Tasmania on Ist June.
