CARD TOURNAMENTS

OBLIGATIONS UNDER NEW ACT. Judging by events in and around Te Awamutu of recent weeks, it would seem that many people are not aware of the provisions cf the Card Tournaments Regulation 'Act, 1983.. The Te Awamutu police have supplied us with the following particulars of obligations of persons conducting card tournaments, and it might be well for promoters to note them carefully:—The obligations, briefly, are: That persons conducting- these tournaments must give the officer-in-charge of the nearest police station seven days’ clear notice of intention to hold a tournament, stating (a) the time and place thereof; (b) the admission fee to the premises, or ether charge for taking part in the tournament; (c) the prizes to be given; and (d) the purpose or purposes to which the proceeds are to be devoted. It should also be noted that where a series of tournaments extending; over not more than six months is. proposed only one notice need be given, but such notice must give particulars aforesaid with respect to each tournament of the series, but where any change of date, admission fee, prizes, etc., is made after the giving of such notice, a fresh notice must be given. No part cf the proceeds of a tournament must be appropriated for private gain of the occupier of the premises or his agent, or any other person in any way connected with the holding of the tournament, but rent for the premises may be paid to the occupier or his agent., only if they are in no way connected with the tournament. The inspector of police for the district may require persons holding tournaments to furnish within fourteen days an audited statement of the receipts and payments in respect to the tournament. Any constable may, when and so often a B he thinks proper, enter into any premises or any part thereof when any game or tournament as aforesaid is about to be held, or is being held therein, or whi e any persons remain therein after the holding of such game or tournament.
