THE PIG INDUSTRY
BREEDERS' OUTSTANDING YEAR. The annual report of the president of the New Zealand Pig Breeders' Association, Mr N. P. Nielsen, of Tiakitahuna, states that the past year was one of outstanding success as far as the association was concerned. The fmanical result constituted a record for the association.
"The low price which has existed for butterfat has made the dairyfarmer consider the possibility of increased revenue from the farm," states the report. "Pig-raising has therefore received much attention, and numerous farmers have reported that they have increased their butterfat returns by as much as twopence a pound as a result of this. The demand for a better type of purebred has therefore contributed largely toward the marked advance that the association has made. " The branches have functioned well," states the report. " A branch has been formed in the North Auckland district, and it is anticipated that a branch will be established in the Southland district during the next Royal Show. In company with the secretary, a visit was made to the Nelson province last November at the request of the Nelson and Golden Bay Farmers' Union. Four well attended meetings were held, and it is hoped that a successful branch will ultimately be established in the Nelson district. " The council has urged upon the Department of Agriculture the necessity of instituting a satisfactory form of grading, and it is hoped that such a system will be instituted before the opening of the next buying season. Efforts are also being made to lift the embargo on the impoitation of stock from Great Britain. To my. mind this is an important factor as far as the pig industry is concerned. Breeders arc taking a great interest in shows, and many shows created records in the number of pig entries they received last season." The balance-sheet shows an excess of income over expenditure of £291 8s 2d, while the fixed deposits at the bank were increased from £7OO to £BSO during the year. Registrations and transfer fees show an increase of £203 17s 2d.
