“GHOST SHIP” HITS LIGHTSHIP

THEN VANISHES IN FOG. Net a soul was seen or heard on board a ghostly white-painted ship which loomed out of the fog, and, after striking the Goodwin lightship, on the British coast, silently vanished. The collision occurred on a recent Friday night. On seeing the approach of the vessel. believed to be a Dutch motor lighter of about 800 tons, the crew of the lightship shouted and burned flares to attract attention. The vessel swung round and, caught by the tide, crashed stern first into the lightship. It struck the lightship again, carried away her bowsprit, slithered along her side, and then disappeared into the fog. The most serious damage to the lightship is below the waterline. She is leaking in the bows and will have to undergo a survey.
