HOUSEKEEPING.

NOTES ON CLEANING

Soiled -carpets and rugs should be washed with a special carpet soap. ■The dust must, of course, first be removed with a vacuum cleaner. This treatment will make .them look almost like new again, for the soap will remove all dirt and, at the same time, it will brighten up the colours. The paint-work of a room, if in good condition, will look like new after washing with sugar soap. When using this remember it is important to follow the directions carefully. To finish, sponge over with clean, warm water, and polish with a soft chamois leather. Protect the wall paper when washing the skirting boards and window frames. This can be done quite easily by holding a piece of cardboard, or zinc, close down to the paint-work.

Where rugs are used the *dust should be removed with a good vacuum cleaner, and the rugs then rolled up and put away. This will leave the floor clear and easy to clean. When the floor is of polished boards or linoleu'm it should be wiped over, after sweeping, with a floor-cloth wrung out of soapy flakes dissolved in warm water. When the floor is bone-dry put down the rugs and polish round them, ivith a good floor polish. This will prevent those slips and tumbles which often occur when the floor is polished underneath the rugs.
