FASHIONS.

WET-WEATHER CLOTHES,

Handbags for the winter season are. made of metal and of wood—both good rain-eonductors.

Stockings of to-day are claimed. to be splashi-proof, even water-proof. Tlhe latest in stockings are fish-net, which are worked in chevron design. Diagonal lines running downward from the back-cfentre seam converge to. points at centre-front. The effect is very slimming round the ankle. iWet-lweather shoes are now made with good, sound welts arranged so that water cannot possibly enter. The ghillie type of shoe seems to remain a favourite. There is also a new shape with a neat little strap running in and out of slots round the ankletop on golf-shoe lines. Umbrellas this winter are .more sober in colour. Some have longer 'handles than heretofore, while others have telescopic handles which shut down to a mere nothing. Buckles for belts and cuff straps, clips, buttons, and hat ornaments are all made in chromium-plated metal, which does not tarnish in the rain. So, altogether, we are well catered for this coming winter. One word about ready-made mackintoshes. You will see them 'marked at absurdly low prices—really re-spectable-looking coats—.well cut and chic. But beware- of them. Look inside before you purchase them. If it is rubberised, then don’t, buy it. This is a first-hand warning, for I fell into the trap and wondered I why my back felt so cold whenever 1 wore the coat. I discovered that the mackintosh “ sweated,” and-, of course, soaked through my jumper or dress and made a nice cold wet patch : quite nasty and very unhealthy.
