SHRUBS FOR LIME SOIL.

Wjitb the season of shrub planting close at hand, it is well to bear in mind the effect of lime upon various hardy shrubs. Several subjects detest lime in any forms, but there are a few which actually need time for their existence, thriving only in lime or chalky soils in their natural habitats. Well-known shrubs which dislike lime are rhododendrons and azaleas, yet it is a curious fact that in China, the home of numerous kinds, the majority are found growing on limestone ridges. Almost every other shrub likes a chalky soil, while the following desire lime in which to take root satisfactorily: Cornus stolonifera and C. Baileyi, clematis jackmani, montana and tangutica, fagus, juniperus, viburnum tomentosum, and V. Opulus. Basic slag, a fertiliser containing much free lime, is an excellent stimulant for, these and can be applied in autumn at the rate of three ounces per square yard.
