TOPICS OF THE HOUR. ITEMS OF INTEREST. (Our Resident Representative.) Whilst Mr Theo. Taylor, of Otorohanga, was motoring homeward along the Wnipa River Road, his cai lights failed when he was approaching a narrow bi'idge. The car collided violently with the end of the hand-rails, resulting in extensive damage tc the vehicle. Mr Taylor was badly bruised by the impact, and had three ribs broken while his travelling companion received rather severe injuries to his head, necessitating the insertion of several stitches by Dr Gilberd. Both suffered severely from the shock of the occurrence. The Otorohanga branch of the Women’s Division of the N.Z. Farmers’ Union has formed a social committee with Mrs S. A. Cook as chairwoman and Mesdames Horneman and Petersen as joint secretaries. At their recent gathering Mrs Duncan annexed the first prize for the best articles made from something old. The roll call for next meeting is “A Quick Recoveiy.”

The Anglican community promoted an enjoyable dance and card evening in the Otorohanga Town Hall annexe on Tuesday evening. The attendance was good, despite unfavourable weather conditions. Hemera’s Band provided the dance music, and the results of the various competitions are as follows:- —First Monte Carlo waltzing competition, Mrs Anderson and Mr K. Cameron; “500” card game, MjVs Hoskins and Mr H. Isaac; spot waltz, Mrs and Mr Ben Carr; second Monte Caido waltz, Mrs Marshall and Mr Girkett; cake guessing, Mrs Morgan. The Rev. Whitlock, vicar of Otorohanga, thanked the promoters for the successes reached, and the Band for their free services. The net results will be donated toward the funds of St. Bride’s Chui’ch. The results of the contest between the ladies of the Otorohanga and Te Kuiti Golf clubs on Saturday last are as follows:—“A” team at Otorohanga: Mrs Austin beat Miss Hitchings Ei—3, Mrs Leigh beat Miss I. Graham 1 up, Mrs Trapski beat Miss Barker 1 up, Miss B. Matthews lost to Mrs Kennedy 2—•!, Mrs Hotson beat Mis Cooper 2. —1, Mrs Boles beat Mrs Hargraves 5—3, Mrs Simms beat Mrs Were 3—2, Miss McKerras lost to Miss Mlatthews 4—3. “B” team at Te Kuiti: Mrs V. Hitchings lost to Mrs Miller 6 —5, Mrs L. Hitchcock beat Mrs Innes-Jones 5 —4, Miss G. Morley and Miss Poidevin all squai'e, Mrs Morley beat Miss Lane 3—2, Mrs W:. Patterson and Mrs Dyasscn all square, Miss Osmond beat Miss Andrews 2 —l, Miss Quinlan beat Miss J. Smith 2—l, Mrs S. Mcßobie lost to Mrs S. Wilson 4—3. Mrs Dyasson won the sti'oke competition held earlier instead of Mrs Evans as erraniously reported. In the men’s in-ter-club match between the Otoi’ohanga and Te Kuiti A teams (at Otorohanga), the former won comfortably, the individual contests being decided as follows, Otorohanga players being mentioned first:*—C. Hotson defeated Hine 1 up, Mcßobie defeated Saunders 2 and 1, A. Fleming defeated S. Wilson 6 and 5, Brian Hotson lost to J. Dinsdale 2 and 1, S. J. Fortescue defeated Low 5 and 4, Alex Morley lest to W. Hotu 4 and 3, Dr Gilberd defeated Dyasson 5 and 4, G .H. Fi-y defeated Irvine 2 and 1. The B team played at Hangatiki with the following results, Otorohanga. players being mentioned first: —J. M. Quin lost to Johnson, Jackson defeated Hetet, Johnson lost to Pcwdriil. Irvine lost to Cooper, Poidevin defeated Hitchings, Schultz defeated N. McColl, Leigh lost to Murdock.
