A VARIED CAREER
The story of Jolun Boles and his success is a strangely-contradictory one. The revival of " King of Jazz," in Which he sang'the big numbers, brings this success into striking prominence.
Contradictions started with him very early. His father was a rich cotton broker in Greenville, Texas. So Jdhn went to college to study medicine. In college he paid much more attention to ibaseball than he did to medicine. Fade out on the medicine business.
Just .as he was preparing for a big League baseball career somsbody discovered that he had a great voice. Just as it beglan to look like a big innings for the voice, John suddenly had to earn a living; so he went to teach school—a girls' school near Albany, Niew York. Just as John was getting along well in teaching girls to talk French, O'scar Seagle heard hr'm sing, and insisted that he give up his teaching career for music. As soon as this was well under way the Great War broke out, and John had to go and fight. Just as he was getting to to an officer the war ran out on him and John was left stranded in New York City. Laurel wreatihis and bravery _ medals don't buy food; so ihe got a job in a musical comiedy. Bales sang so well in. " Kitty's Kisses " that Gloria Swanson engaged him as her leading man in a silent pictuile, " The Loves of Sunya." He didn't make enough progress in silent pictures to startle the world, but as soon as sound came in the movies fell all over themselves to get him to sing in such successes as " Desert Song," " Rio Rita," " Captain of the Guard," and " King of Jazz." was .about to 'be crowned king of the musicals when musicals went
