The ranks of the fast diminishing band of King Country pioneer settlers was further depleted on the Ist inst., with the death of Mr Benjamin Budden, at his home, near Waitara, aged 78 years. The late Mr Budden was a native of Dorchester, England, and arrived in the Dominion when a young man, afterwards settling for many years at Pahiatua, where he was a prominent carrier and contraetotr. With the opening up of Crown lands in the King Country, some 30 years ago, the late Mr Budden. acquired a large block of land at Honikiwi, and conveted it into good pasture. Exchanging this property a few years ago for the Waitara farm, he was engaged in dairying there up to the time of his passing. A man of wonderful energy and endurance, Mr Budden was always to the fore in all movements for the benefit of his district, and took an active and most prominent part on local bodies, school committeess, and similar organisations. Mrs Budden and a large family survive, among whom are Mr B. H. Budden, of Pokuru, Mr Bernard Budden, Ngaroto, and Mrs W. Rattray, of Honikiwi.
