USE OF FERTILISERS
LOSS IN PRODUCTION. A striking illustration of the important part played in production by the liberal use of fertilisers is provided in a comparison of the production of the 1929-30 and 1930-31 seaSoJ}£. coincident with the greatly decreased use of fertilisers, production per cow dropped from 2181 b butter fat in the 1929-30 season to an estimated production of only 1851 b butter fat for the season just closed. _ In 1929-30 season farmers used the greatest quantity of fertilisers ever recorded in one season, 350,000 tons. The following year the quantity of fertiliser used dropped by 50,000 tons and the average production per cow went down to 2011 b. In two years the quantity of fertiliser used dropped by 100,000 tons and the average production per cow by 331 b. Farmers have thus saved £650,000 in fertilisers," but have lost approximately £3,000.000 through the reduction in average production of butter fat.
