TE AWAMUTU DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL.

MEETING OF COMMITTEE.

Mr G. W. Mairs presided .at the monthly meeting of Te Awamutu District High School Committee on Wednesday evening, and also present were Messrs H. I£. G. WLson, A. P. Harvey, G. F. Smith, M. G. Galloway, J A. Maxwell, and J. G. "Wynyard (secretary). The headmaster, Mr A. J. Shepherd, was in attendance.

Leave of absence was granted to Messrs G. B. Melrose and A. J. Sinclair.

The treasurer presented a statement o{ the financial position.—Approved. The chairman reported the mam features of .discussion and consideration at the annual meeting of the dental clinic. A levy of 2s 9d per child was decided upon, and school committees were left to arrange for their contribution on this basis. There wou.d be a reduction of 3d per child if the schools' contribution was lodged with the Dental Clinic Commitcee not later than 30th November. The headmaster reported that the primary school roll now stood ac 390 and the secondary department roll at 101. Considerable interruption of school work had been caused by absences due to the prevalence of colds and mild influenza. The average attendance in the primary department was 342 and in the secondary department 94. . , ■ In his report on school sports, Mr Shepherd mentioned that a challenge had been issued To Auck.and Grammar School for the Rankin Shie.d, and probably the match would eventuate in Te Awamutu during the term holidays. . , Attention was directed to the depositing of rubbish from the Town Hall after social functions in that building on the grounds of the infant school. The headmaster stated that the primary seven-a-side football team was successful in winning the cup at the annual seven-a-side tournament, and the primary A basketball team won the rose bowl last Saturday. The secondary fifteen was leading in the Waipa Union's third grade championship, while the senior A basketball team succeeded in winning against a visiting Hamilton Convent Old Girls' team. It was stated that the date considered most suitable for the annual school concert was about September 22nd, and the chairman and headmaster were deputed to arrange for a definite date. Complimentary reference was made to 'the improved appearance of the school grounds, and the headmaster stated Mr Dixon, the agricultural instructor, had also commented favourably. Punga arches have been erected and maintainance work done at the main school. Messrs W. Jeffery and A. P. Harvey have donated native shrubs.
