THE BY-ELECTION

SOUTHERN MAORI SEAT. RATANA CANDIDATE WINS. CHRISTCHURCH, Wednesday. By a majority of 241 votes, Mr Eruera Tihema Tirikatene, independent Ratana candidate, was returned as member for the Southern Maori electorate at the by-election to-day, necessitated by the death of Mr T. Makitarana the former Government member. Mr William Te Ihoka Parata, the official Coalition candidate, filled second place. Officially there were six candidates, but a few days ago one, Mr W'ircmu Mihaka, announced his retirement. However, once a candidate is nominated he must go to the poll. The Southern Maori electorate includes the whole of the South Island and Stewart Island.
