WAR DISABILITIES
RESULT OF THE EARTHQUAKE
GISBORNE, Monday.
An inquest was held to-day concerning the death of Thomas Barbour, aged 48 years, whose body was found on his mother-in-law’s farm on Saturday with a gunshot wound in the forehead. The coroner, Mr P. HHarper, returned a verdict that death was due to a gunshdt wound, selfinflicted, while deceased was in a state of mental depression. It was stated in evidence that deceased was an Imperianl war pensioner, and, in addition to losing an arm, suffered from shell shock. Before coming to Gisborne he was in the Hawke’s Bay earthquake and was then removed to hospital. A medical officer at the hospital had reported that deceased’s nerves had suffered severely and his war disabilities returned as a result of the earthquake.
