REGENT THEATRE.

“LONELY WIVES.” TO-NIGHT, MONDAY, AND TUESDAY. Is this or isn’t 'it a riot? To fool his prying mother-in-law and incidentally enable him to keep an appointment with a charming young client seeking a divorce, a prominent attorney induces a vaudeville impersonator to take his place for one evening. Unfortunately that is the evening his wife selects to surprise him by an earlier return than was expected. Still more unfortunately, it develops that his young client is the wife of the vaudeville impersonator. The errant husband does not return until morning, and then he is closely-trailed by the young client. The hilarious situation that results is probably the most riotous farce since the advent of talking pictures.

After deserting comedy roles, to accept several dramatic characterisations, Laura La Plante is again portraying the type of parts in which she won screen fame. This deft young comedienne fills one of the feminine leads in “Lonely Wives,” a Pathe all star farce. Miss La Plante is happy over her {return to comedy. “There is much more tangible satisfaction in giving a good comedy performance than in playing a dramatic role,” she asserts. “We can see and hear people laugh, and know that we are doing something to brighten a dull world. Players enjoy the ridiculousness of situations as they enact them, almost as much as an audience does in watching. Add to that the thrill I experienced when the picture was previewed and I heard a crowded theatre echo a breathless succession of laughs, and you will understand why I regard comedy as mare satisfying to a player.”

The blonde star of funsters is one of. an imposing cast in “Lonely Wives,” which will be shown at the Regent Theatre to-night, and on Monday and Tuesday. Other featured players are Edward Everett Horton, Esther Ralston, Spencer Charters, Maude Eburne and Georgette Rhodes. Spencer Mack directed the picture, which is based on an A 1 Wood stage success.
