FALSE PRETENCES
PARTNERS AT VARIANCE. jßy TelefirraDh. Press Association.) HAMILTON, Wednesday. Stating that the evidence for the prosecution did not support the charge, Mr Wyvern Wilson, S.M., dismissed the information preferred against Grenville Harper Glover, aged 31, in the Hamilton Police Count today, of obtaining £5 from Roger Newnes by fraud. The police alleged that accused obtained the money by means of a false pretence by representing that he "was a director of the Transil Manufacturing Co., Ltd., that he was authorised to appoint agents for the company, and that the company had the backing of a certain firm.
Evidence was given by Mrs Delia Lega© that she, her, husband and the accused were shareholders in the Transil Manufacturing Co., Ltd. Glover and she were the directors, and Glover was given authority to appoint agents. An agreement had been entered into with the firm mentioned to act as distributing agents, but the agreement had not been given effect to.
Witness said Glover had authority to appoint W. M. Pitcher agent for the firm's product, a cleansing matterial, at Hamilton, but had no authority to cancel the agency and appoint Newnes and collect a deposit from him.
After hearing the evidence the magistrate said he did not think it would be at all safe to convict. Two statements made by Glover to Newnes were perfectly true. The whole matter seemed to have arisen through petty disputes between two partners regarding the rendering of accounts. It seemed to be a matter for civil action rather than fdr a prosecution. The case was dismissed.
On a charge of issuling a receipt for more than £2 without affixing a twopenny stamp, Glover was fined £2.
