IN WAIPA COUNTY. .ENGINEER'S REPORT. The engineer, Mr J. W. Civil', presented the following report on works progress -during the past month to Wednesday's meeting of the Waipa County Council :- : , NEWCASTLE RIDING.

M;H. Great South Road (Ngarua■wahia to Hamilton). —Grading has teen, carried out by motor and horse graders; a!so surfacework has been carried out. Bedford's and Collie's Roads.—23B cyds. sand has been carted from local pits by Fogarty and spread. Te Kbwhai-Horotiu Road.—so cyds. gravel sand has been carted by Surfaceman Forbes and spread where required. E. C. Moore, with lorries has carted 24 cyds. sand from Maori Pit on to Robertson's Road and 52 cyds. from Kiihfus's pit on to Whata-whata-Tuhikaramea Road. Proctor's Road. —38 cyds. gravel sand has been carted from racecourse pit by E. C. Moore with lorries and spread.

M.H., Hamilton-Whatawhata Road. •—137 cyds. Smeed's metal chips have been supplied, carted and spread, and grading by motor grader carried out. Grading and general surfacework has been carried out on various other roads in the riding. HAMILTON RIDING,

M.H., Great South Road (Hamilton to Ngaruawahia).—Grading and general surfacework has been carried out. Grandvue Road.—Eight chains has been formed which junctions with the Hamilton boundary road, and 20ft. by 9in. pipe culvert placed into position. Ninety cyds. of gravel sand has been carted from Holmes' Pit by E. C. Moore's Worries and spread on the following roads:—2o cyds. Burbush's; 40 cyds. Te Rapa and 30 cyds. on Te Kowhai to Te Rapa Road. Surfacework has been carried out on various other roads in the riding. RUKUHIA RIDING.

M.H., Great South Road (HamiltonTe Awamutu). —Grading has been carried out both by motor and horse graders. Eighty cyds. gravel has been carted by No. 1 truck from dumps and spread; also 90 cyds. carted from Rayne's pit and spread. Levels have been taken of some 2 miles 34 chains of drains at liukuhia, effecting lands of ten settlers. One section of the drain 1 mile 8 chains in length has been plotted and grades fixed for carrying out a drainage scheme from Penniket's boundary up through Teddy's, Flyger's, Tomin's and Asplin's properties, which will dower the Cameron Lake about 2ft.

6in. below ordinary summer level, and will assist drainage of land around 1 , lake. The work has been already started with relief workers, assisted by interested settlers in the way of transport, labour and cash, 1 The second section, 1 mile 26 chains in length, from Lake Cameron across the Rukuhia Road through Mr Down's fend Mr properties, then along übundaries* of Messrs Buchanan's, Orr's and Douglas' to Mr Huochen's property—can be dealt with later. At present watershed is at Parry's and Buchanan's boundary. General surfacework has been carried out on various roads in the riding by Surfacemen Garvey and Body with road plant. TUHIKARAMEA RIDING. .

' i Is 4 cyds. gravel sand has been 'carted from Gore's pit by A. Bromwich with council's truck on to the following roads: Frankton-Pirongia; 52 cyds. Rukuhia; 44 cyds. McGregor's, and 24 cyds. on to Gillard's and Ohaupo roads. 126 cyds. sand has been carted from Maisey's pit by Bromwich. 98 cyds. on to Robson's and 28 cyds. on to Korpmatua Road. . Timber has been supplied and 10ft. bridge past S. Limmer's has been redecked. Grading and general surfacework has been carried out on various other . roads by surfacemen Drabble with road plant. At the request of the riding memand Wilkinson, of Rukuhia, who are ber on behalf of Messrs Henderson availing themselves of No. 4B scheme, I have taken levels of 1 mile 44 chains of drain which is one of the outlets to the Rukuhia swamp, starting at a point 14 chains down stream side of 7ft. by 7ft. culvert on McGregor's Road, coming up to culvert oh McGregor's Road and up boundary drain between Henderson's and Wilk- ■ inson's to where it intersects Rukuhia railway station roads. Plans have been prepared and particulars forwarded to Messrs Henderson and Wilkinson re grades and width of drain work should be carried out t0,.50 as to give them maximum benefit at a reasonable cost. KAIPAKI RIDING. M.H., Great South Road (HamiltonTe Awamutu).—loß cyds. Te Eawa metal has been-supplied, carted and spread and- grading carried out by •motor grader. Mill Road.—Some 50 cyds. sand have been"carted by Pukekura trucks from May's pit and repairs carried Out. • ■ Ofost of the Kaipaki roads have been graded by Pukekura riding 'pukekura riding. 1 Nolan's ■ Road.—236 cyds. gravel sand has been carted from Peppercorn's pit by the riding trucks and spread and 32 cyds. carted and spread on the Rotorangi to Puahue Road. Grading has been carried out on the Te Awamutu-Cambridge main :highway -and on most of the other roads in the riding. Relief workers from Cambridge -have been .excayatihg and forming drain to levels'given, in up through •JlcLarnon's property, and are now busy cleaning drains from Emblin's up toward Rotorangi Road. : '■■'■■ RANGIAOHIA RIDING. M.H., Great South Road (Hamil-:.ton-Te Awaniutu).—ll3 cyds. Te 'Kawa,metal have been supplied, carted and spread. Road and portion of Mill.— Sbnie:, 230 cyds. gravel sand from •;. Pollard's pit and 38 cyds. gravel sand : from "-railway; pit have been carted ■and spread. This gives Messrs Jary and Muir on all-weather road by going Kaipaki way. ( Mr Jary con-

Te Ranu Road (Cairn's Culvert). — Settlers, as arrangeed, have excavated drain leading up from Mangapiko /stream to Te Ranu road and 3on. by 24in. pipe culvert has been laid into position. Puahue to Rotorangi Road.—l6B cyds. gravel sand have been carted from Peppercorn's pit by Pukekura riding lorries and good portion of this road top-dressed with same. Hairini to Puahue.—Some 30 cyds. gravel from Hairini dump have been carted and repairs carried out. Repairs and general surfacework have been carried out on various other roads. , ORAKAU RIDING. M.H., Great South Road (Te Awamutu to County Boundary):—l2o cyds. Te Kawa metai have been supplied, carted and spread, also 63 eyas. Puniu River gravel have been carted from dumps and spread, and 84 cyds. gravel carted from Onion's and stacked on side of road for future maintenance. - iMaunga Road Grant, £866 13s 4d, £2 for 1. —Contractor E. J. Tulloch has completed his contract No. 251 consisting of carting and delivering metal and gravel and same has been spread and rolled, which completes the metalling of the full length of this road, I mile 58 chains in distance. Monckton's Road Grant, £4OO, £2 for £l.—Contractor F. Jas. Gee has completed his contract No. 244 of forming 55 chains of 20ft. road—this completes formation of full length of this road, 1 mile 72 chains in distance. Tika Road.—24 cyds. of Puniu River gravel has been carted from river and repairs carried out. Aotearoa Road.—Some 5 miles of this road have been metalled by the Government by relief workers. It has been rolled with our roller under arrangement with the Public Works Department and the Otorohanga County. Over two miles of this metalling is in our county and the balance is in Otorohanga. The rolling; has not been too satisfactory rind su'table blinding; material is required. Grading and general surfacework has been carried out on various other works in the riding. MANGAPIKO RIDING. Frankton to Pirongia Main Highway.—72 cyds. crushed metal have been carted from the Pirongia dump and spread. F. Waters has completed his contract No. 252 of excavating and carting 500 cyds. of gravel sand from Hodgson's pit at 2s 5d per cyd. 200 cyds. have been spread on the road and 300 cyds. have been dumped for future maintenance. Dingle's Road.—2os cyds. sand have been carted by E. C. Moore's trucks and one of the council's trucks, from Perrin's pit, and full length of this road sanded. Ham's to Teddy's and portion of Forkert's Road.—2lo cyds. sand has been carried from. Perrin's pit and the road resanded where required. Burns' Road.—lo2 cyds. of gravel sand has been carted by our own trucks from railway pit and the road from Wilson's to Mr Tailby's entrance sanded. This will give Messrs Burns and Tailby an all-weather road to Te Awamutu,

Ohaupo-Paterangi Road (Graham's Bridge, 12ft. in length).—l have inspected thite btfidge, and find that both stringers, decking and handrails require renewing and have placed order for same.

Ngaroto Railway Overhead Bridge. —The district engineer of railways wrote drawing attention to the state of decking of the bridge and I find that it will be best to renew decking throughout. The length of bridge is 53ft. I have arranged'for the supply of timber for same which I expect to arrive next month. Levels of drain from Mangakaware Lake up through Mr Norton's property, a distance of 461 chains up to the 36in. concrete pipe culvert on Meadway's to Te Awamutu Road, has been plotted on paper and grades fixed ready, and part of the work carried out by unemployed. Levels have also been taken from culvert up through Adam's and Ham's properties to Bremen's boundary, a distance of 1 mile 10 chains from the said lake, and levels fixed for giving relief to a 11.,) which ncessitated the lowering of concrete culvert 2ft which has already been done. This will enable us to carry out the deepening of drains on Ham's to Teddy's road, which is badly neededCampbell's drain and culvert.— Crossing the Te Awamutu-Pirongia Road near Pirongia, levels have been taken of 35 chains of proposed work starting at gully in Mounsey's, some 13 chains below road culvert and continued 22 chains above culvert up through Mr Campbell's to section leased from Council. The said levels have been plotted and grades fixed, which necessitates 18in pipe culvert in place of 12in pipe already in and laid Ift Bin lower than present culvert. Pipes have been supplied and conveyed to site, and draining started by the relief workers. KAKEPUKU RIDING. Webster's gate to Harris' corner. Grant £667, £2 for £l.—Contractor Lowe has completed his contract No. • 242 a. of carting and delivering 1900 cyds. of Waipa river gravel, metalling a distance of 1 mile 36 chains which links up metalling from Kakapuku School to junction of Alexander's road. Contractor Smale has completed his contract No. 246 of scooping 2967 cyds. of Waipa river gravel. 1904 cyds. for Webster's gate to Harris' corner, 100 cyds. for Kakepuku Riding and 963 cyds. for Te Awamutu to Barton's crossing. Te Awamutu-Barton crossing.— Contractors J. Hanson and J. TuUock have completed their contract of carting and delivering 963 cyds. of Waipa River gravel. 16 cyds. of Te Kawa metal-has been supplied, carted and spread. ■ Levels have been taken of some 35 chains of drain by Richardson's property nast the junction of Morgan's road, starting at main stream 13 chains 'below old timber culvert, across road and going up 22 "bains above culvert, including road dram. Outlet drain has been brought up to levels given by Mr Richard— and 18in oipe culvert laid at lower level to suit drainage of road and land on

west side of road. • GENERAL. There are 209 men working under No. 5 Scheme in the County; 140 from Hamilton, 12 from Cambridge and 57 from Te Awamutu. The expenditure is approximately £IOOO per month. Extra shed is required at Te Awamutu depot for housing trucks and machinery. Would ask authority to have same erected at a cost of not more than £l4O. Land development scheme. —Regards 9036 acres reported on by committee for development purposes,_ I prepared a comprehensive plan with report, re-roading system.
