UNDERSTOOD—THE FARMERS.

Sir, —it is amazing that such opinions should be given expression to as those in your sub leader of Saturday last. Most people accept the leading articles as expressing the views of the paper. It is to be hoped that you •will be able to disclaim this particular one as being your own. To admit that a policy of deflation is in force, and to say that the Government is not iresponsible for it, surely displays colossal ignorance on the part of the ■writer. The leader writer's statement that the Government has no influence or control over the deflation policy may be correct, but why in Heaven's name should it not exercise control over it? Sweden in October; last abolished the deflation policy common to most' other countries, and put her monetary system on a price index basis, and has been flourishing ever since. If our Government persists in allowing the deflation policy to continue, it means accentuating the present misery and suffering and a repudiation of all contracts, and if allow- , ed to continue to a conclusion, we shall arrive at a state of barter. Your writer would be well advised to do a considerable amount more reading of up-tordate literature, and to open his eyestto the great danger of the preand to pull his weight with, those who, along with the Farmers'Union, are fighting all they know ~ to get this country' l out of the mess that this cruel deflation policy has got "it into.—-I am, etc., C _„.•___,-..''.. :■■■ ■-■<•■/ C. T. CRAWLEY;- ' (It may be hoped ttat this Dominion will never experience the conditions of Sweden —particularly the extremity which necessitated the chance • over referred to. —Ed.)
