EXPLORER'S RELICS
STOLEN FROM MUSEUM. The theft of certain relics of Captain Cook from the ethnographical museum of Gottingen University directs attention to their past travels, says the London Times. The feather cloak and helmet of a Hawaiian king, of which they consist, were given by the Hawaiians to Captain Cook when he discovered the islands on his third voyage in 1778. They were brought to England, and King George 111., who was also Elector of Hanover, gave them to the University of Gottingen, founded by his grandfather in 1737. The cloak and helmet are made of plaited coir covered with thousands of brilliant red and yellow feathers from birds now rare or extinct.
