PIRONGIA NOTES

WOMEN'S INSTITUTE. There was a splendid muster, of members of the local branch of the Women's Institute at the last monthly gathering held in the Memorial Hall, on Wednesday last. Two very instructive demonstrations were given by Mrs Thomson, of Hamilton, on slipper and mat making. Advice has been received from the Director-General of Agriculture, that the Rabbit Board district has been constituted. The process now will be that the returning officers upon receipt of the Gazette notice will compile the ratepayers list and lodge the same at the Magistrate's Court, Te Awamutu, so that any possible errors in discription of area, etc., may be made to the magistrate by those concerned. Following the closing of the list a call for nominations for the five positions on the board covering a period of 21 days will be made by the Returning Officer. It follows that the board will commence operations during July next. In the meantime good work is being done in the reduction of the pest throughout the area, in fact quite a number of record catches have been reported. This will enable the board to commence operations under favourable conditions. Owing to a plentitude of junior Rugby players a number of last year's thirds are looking for a game and as the Rover's Club has extended an invitation to them to join the Rover thirds several of them may be able to keep their hand in as there is net sufficient for a third grade team here this season. The local club is arranging for a concert r\nd dance on the 25th inst., in aid of the club's fujnds. The school children are having the usual May holiday. So far the attendance has warranted the appointment of our second assistant teacher and it is hoped that the attendance will be maintained for the necesifcry period enabling the third teacher to be permanently retained. A series of entertainments are in progress to raise the local quota for the dental clinic and already good work has been done in this direction by the new committee. This effort will culminate on the 25th inst with a daylight bazaar. , Weather conditions are favourable to growth just now and several good takes of young grass are to be seen throughout the district, notably on the farms of Messrs J. Papesch, S. Hanning, Brough Bros., Grace Bros., T. McClunie, and Miller Bros. The cattle here for the most part have finished the season in good condition, but winter fodder not over plentiful and in the absence of a mild winter some will experience difficulty in worrying through. A good many herds will commence the new season early and there are indications of an increase in the number of herds, owing, to some extent, to the improfitable market for sheep products.
