BAND CONCERT

DELIGHTFUL ENTERTAINMENT. The sacred concert arranged by the Te Awamutu Municipal Band, and the proceeds from which will be devoted to the relief of unemployment in Te Awamutu, attracted a very large attendance to the Empire Theatre on Sunday evening. It is estimated that the attendance exceeded 500, and all were very enthusiastic and appreciative of the efforts made by the band and -by the entertainers. Encores were frequent, each individual contributor being urged to respond with one or more encore items. The band, mustering well over 30 members, under Mr R. H. Close, quite excelled any previous exhibitions with some beautifully rendered selections and marches, and not the least interesting was the selection from Wagner's works. This item, which traversed many examples of the German composer's best known works, was preceded by Mr A. J. Sinclair describing in understandable language the chief features and characteristics of Wagner's compositions. This description was, in itself, an education to the audience, and Mr Sinclair was heartilv applauded for his contribution. That the effect of his informative chat was felt when the band rendered the selections was very evident. Bandsman Maguire got a good reception for his violin solos, and the following vocalists pleased greatly with their contributions:—Mesdames. C. Corboy, E. Hooper, and E. J. Ramsbottom, Miss A. Hohapata, and Cecil Corboy, while the vocal duet by Mr and Mrs Corboy was also much enjoyed. We understand that the band, encouraged by the success of Sunday evening's concert, plans to foMow with a series of entertainments of that kind at monthly intervals during the winter months. The accompaniments for the vocal items were very ably played by Mesdames E. W. Whit'- and C. Corboy, and Mr Sinclair.
